BETHLEHEM, (PIC)– Zakariyya Dawud Issa, 43, from Khadar in Bethlehem governorate, has fallen into a coma after not being served the proper treatment by the Negev prison ward, sources among the prisoners have reported.

They added that symptoms had been appearing on Issa for months without being given the necessary care by the prison’s doctors. As his condition worsened he lost 35 kilos (77 lbs.) of body weight in just a month. Later, growths began appearing on his head, the sources said.

The situation worsened to the point that Issa had repeatedly began losing consciousness since 8 March 2011. After repeated incidents he was taken to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva, where he went into a coma.

Tensions rise in the Negev prison as alarming news of Issa’s health has spread.

The Gaza Prisoners’ Affairs Ministry has placed blame on the Israeli occupation authorities.

The ministry’s media director Riyadh al-Ashqar said in a statement on Wednesday that Issa’s ordeal began with a slipped disk that occurred five months ago. The prison neglected to treat him until he dropped from 110 to just 55 kilos, he said.

Prisoners’ Affairs Minister Atallah Abu Sabah has made calls for immediate intervention to see Issa’s release from the prison so he can get the proper care.
