GAZA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Israeli airplanes launched a series of airstrikes in the Gaza Strip early Friday, killing a boy and wounding some people, witnesses and medical sources said.

Violence flared up in the morning when militants carried out a series of attacks in southern Israel’s Red Sea resort of Eilat, killing at least seven Israelis and wounding dozens more.

Israel said the attacks were plotted in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and some assailants infiltrated into Eilat through Sinai, which also borders Gaza.

A one-year-old boy was killed and 17 of his relatives were wounded as Israeli airplanes hit a Hamas site adjacent to their house in northwest Gaza.

The office of Xinhua Gaza Bureau was also partly damaged during Israel’s airstrikes.

The attacks followed an earlier Israeli airstrike that killed six Palestinians in the southern city of Rafah, including senior commanders and militants from the Popular Resistance Committees.

Also after midnight, Israeli aircraft launched two attacks in Gaza City and in Khan Younis, hitting a security complex run by the Hamas-led government, but no one was killed as Hamas had already evacuated all its military, security and government sites.

The overnight air raids launched by Israel are seen as a reprisal for attacks on a desert road north of Eilat along the Egyptian border, in which eight Israelis were killed.
