A member of an Irish-based pro-Palestinian group has called for a ban on Israel’s ‘profitable blood diamonds,’ which help fan the flames of internal wars across Africa.

Sean Clinton, a council member of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign, told IRNA on Friday that Israel purchases illegally smuggled diamonds from Africa and after cutting, sells them at a very high price on the international market.

According to a UN definition, “blood diamonds” or “conflict diamonds” are diamonds that originate from areas controlled by forces or factions opposed to legitimate and internationally recognized governments and are used to fund military action in opposition to those governments, or in contravention of the decisions of the UN Security Council.

Clinton, who has also been leading the Boycott Israeli Diamonds campaign in Ireland, said, “…when someone buys a diamond from Israel they are helping to fund war crimes and other human rights violations in Palestine.”

The member of Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign also accused some NGOs and groups of being complicit in Israel’s diamond trade, and pointed out that such business should not go unchallenged.

The civil rights activist also announced a plan to raise public awareness in London’s Hatton Gardens– one of the hubs of the global diamond trade.
