RAMALLAH, (PIC)– A humanitarian convoy dubbed Miles of Smiles 6 will head to Gaza in early October to deliver badly needed medical supplies as the vast majority of Gazans continue to rely on aid amid a crippling Israeli siege.

Organizers have been consulting with the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza in a bid to provide only needed medical supplies. Arrangements are also being made with the Egyptian foreign ministry to obtain permission before the convoy heads to Egypt before crossing the border to Gaza.

The convoy’s journey is set for 1 October and is expected to land in Egyptian capital Cairo on 2 Oct. where it would make official visits, organizers said in a statement on Tuesday evening.

Miles of Smiles 6 would then head for El-Arish city on 5 Oct. before entering the Strip on the same day, according to the statement. The some 100 convoy activists from various European and Arab organizations are planning on remaining in Gaza until 10 Oct.

The medical aid on board has been estimated at a value of 1.3 million dollars and includes medicines and power chairs as well as cars and buses to be used by individuals with special needs.

Eighty percent of the 1.6 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip live below the level of poverty, 65 percent are unemployed, and some one million live on humanitarian aid.

The convoy aims at providing medical supplies that are unavailable as a result of the ongoing Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip. It also aims at building awareness of the Gazans’ plights by witnessing the situation first-hand.
