BEIRUT, (PIC)– Hamas political leader Mahmoud al-Zahar said that Palestine is the closest it has ever been to liberty, reiterating that resistance is what will etch the path to freedom from the Israeli occupation.

This came during a speech Zahar gave Friday in Greater Sidon Township in southern Lebanon, with attendance by Palestinian refugees and parties from both Palestine and Lebanon.

Although the Gaza Strip takes up only two percent of the area of Palestine, Sharon was expelled through resistance, Zahar underlined. Despite the siege, we have been able to achieve self-sufficiency in several areas and necessities, he added.

Zahar also brought up other issues such as continued occupation and settlement in the West Bank, the hunger strike of the Palestinian prisoners, and Hamas’s commitment to reconciling with all Palestinian factions and rebuilding the PLO in a way that represents all Palestinians.

Earlier Friday morning, Zahar headed a delegation from Hamas in a meeting with former Lebanese Prime Minister Salim Hoss in Aisha Bakkar.

According to remarks by Zahar, the trip came in the framework of a series of visits to Lebanon aimed at improving conditions inside the Palestinian refugee camps in the country. He emphasized that such improvements would not jeopardize the repatriation of the Palestinian refugees and promoted Palestinian residence in the Lebanese refugee camps instead of migration to Latin American countries and elsewhere.
