The event was sponsored by a variety of local businesses and was named in honor of the Palestinian statehood bid at the UN, and Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in Israeli prisons.

“Today is the thirteenth day of our prisoners [striking] in Israeli prisoners and we are dedicating this race to their freedom and to the UN declaration of a state,” said Dafer Qassis, one of the race organizers.

About 350 people took part in the race, most of them children except for a 40-strong contingent of over-35 businessmen. The event was held on Sunday afternoon under the auspices of Bishop Munib Yunan of Beit Sahour.

Head of the Bethlehem branch of the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, Qadura Faris, told PNN that the detainees were entering the “most dangerous stage” after more that 2 weeks of ongoing hunger strike, they need all support and solidarity from their people.
