Khaled Mashal, head of the Political Bureau of the Hamas movement, revealed details on the prisoners swap deal reached with Israel via German, Egyptian and Arab mediators. The deal would ensure the release of corporal Gilad Shalit in return for the release of 1027 Palestinian detainees held by Israel.

Mashal stated in a TV statement on Tuesday evening that the deal will be implemented on two stages; first Israel would release 450 detainees within a week, and two months later Israel would release 550 detainees.

Mashal said that all 27 female detainees imprisoned by Israel will be freed; adding that in the first stage of the deal, 315 detainees, sentenced to life terms would be set free.

He added that the detainees who will be set free as part of this deal are not only from the West Bank or the Gaza Strip, but also from Jerusalem, the Golan Heights and in exile.

“This deal represents the unity of our homeland, and our people”, Mashal stated, “It tells the world that the Palestinians in Palestine and in exile are one nation”
The Hamas leader described the deal as a national achievement, and that its “bring mixed feelings of sadness and joy”.

“We could not liberate all detainees held by Israel”, Mashal stated, “But this deal is an achievement we are proud of, a step towards liberation and independence”.

He vowed that efforts to ensure the release of all Palestinian detainees held by Israel will never stop, adding that “the resistance will do the impossible to release all detainees”.

Mashal further stated that the Al Qassam Brigades of Hamas, and the other groups that managed to capture Shalit, proved that “a group that managed to achieve such a deal, is capable of liberating the land, achieving the right of return and the unity of the Palestinians and their factions”.

Furthermore, a senior source within the Hamas movement stated that the deal includes the release of 300 detainees sentenced to life-terms, 45 detainees from Jerusalem and six from the 1948 territories.

Abu Mujahid, spokesperson of the National Resistance Committee, told the Arabs48 news website that the deal includes 450 detainees who are political leaders and sentenced to life-terms, in addition to all female detainees, children, sick detainees and elderly.
