An official with the Ministry of Detainee Affairs, Ziad Abu Ein, warned of the possibility that Israel might try to manipulate the second phase of the prisoner-swap deal, which will be implemented after two months, the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA) reported.
Abu Ein mentioned the experience of the swap deal in 1983, when the detainees of Ansar detention center in Southern Lebanon were released, and 65 detainees were swapped for six Israeli soldiers.
Responding to a question on a ‘Voice of Palestine’ broadcast regarding safeguards to ensure Israel’s compliance after the release of the Israeli soldier Shalit, Abu Ein stated, “There are Egyptian guarantees. However, the occupation is what controls the reins in the end.” He emphasized the need to carefully follow up the deal to ensure that no manipulation could be made by Israel that might be described as ‘deceptive.
