PNN – During a protest that erupted in the southern West Bank city of Hebron on Sunday morning, four people fainted after inhaling what appeared to be stronger type of Israeli tear gas.

A PNN reporter said clashes began around 8 a.m. on Sunday in the neighborhood of Tel al-Rumeida, at the Israeli military checkpoint separating the areas of H1 and H2. The protest was in response to the three-day closure of the Cordoba Girls’ School inside H2, which has forced Palestinian teachers and students to hold classes on the street outside the checkpoint.

The Israeli forces used “The Scream,” a high-volume sound cannon mounted on a truck, to disperse protesters before switching to firing tear gas canisters. When the four people inhaled the tear gas, two of them reportedly fell immediately and began convulsing, requiring immediate medical attention. An ambulance could not arrive in time, so they were taken to a hospital in a nearby car.

One teacher was also arrested and released shortly thereafter.

Hebron was divided into H1 and H2 in 1997. The Israeli settlements inside H2 comprise a Jewish population of around 600 people, protected by 2,000 armed soldiers among 70,000 Palestinians.  Since then, relations between the Jewish settlers and Palestinian residents of H2 have been characterized by extreme strain, and earlier this fall, the Hebron municipality officially named one of the principal thoroughfares in the area “Apartheid Street.”
