GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — Popular Resistance Committees spokesman Abu Mujahid said Monday that the release of Palestinian prisoners and Gilad Shalit will be kept away from the media.

“There will be an official welcoming ceremony for the freed prisoners at the Rafah crossing. Islamic, national and government officials, and members of the parliament, will participate in the ceremony and the festival later on,” Abu Mujahid told Ma’an.

The release of Palestinian prisoners and captured Israeli soldier Shalit, however, will take place confidentially in Egypt, Abu Mujahid said.

Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and Yihia Ibrahim Hasan al-Sinwara, a Gazan detainee set for release, will speak at the welcoming ceremony for the prisoners, Abu Mujahid said.

The prisoner release is set to go ahead as planned on Tuesday, Abu Mujahid added.

Media reports on Sunday said that Israel began transferring the 477 prisoners due for release in the first stage of the deal, which will see over 1,000 prisoners freed from Israeli jails in exchange for Shalit, who was captured by militants in Gaza in 2006.
