BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Fifteen prisoners arrived in Qatar late Tuesday night after being released as part of a prisoner exchange deal between Hamas and Israel, a statement by the Palestinian embassy in Qatar said.

A reception held for the prisoners was attended by Qatari officials and the Palestinian ambassador, together with members of the local Palestinian community.

Eleven Palestinians arrived in Turkey early Wednesday as part of the thousand-for-one prisoner exchange, Turkish media said.

Meanwhile, Hamas officials welcomed 16 freed detainees exiled to Syria at Damascus airport.

The prisoners were exiled abroad under the terms of the agreement to release 1,027 Palestinians in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

More than 5,000 Palestinians remain behind bars in Israel, some convicted of violent acts over years of armed resistance to Israel and others held without charge.

The prisoner rights group Addameer estimates that Israel has jailed 650,000 Palestinians since 1967. With a population of 2.5 million in the West Bank and 1.6 million in Gaza, it is difficult to find a Palestinian family unaffected.
