PNN – As the Israeli prepared to blast a mountainside near the southern West Bank village of al-Walajeh to clear room for the wall, a group of Palestinian and international activists stood on the land to stop it. In their removal from the land, one activist was injured and another arrested.

One of the arrested activists was Dr. Mazen Qumsiyeh, a former Yale professor and author of “Popular Resistance in Palestine.” Others, including al-Walajeh community organizer Shireen al-Araj, were pepper sprayed by Israeli troops.

ActiveStills photographer Anne Paq told PNN that the demolitions would likely continue within the hour. It was later reported that more residents of al-Walajeh had sat down on the planned route of the wall as human shields against the demolition.

Last Thursday, Israeli construction crews conducted another blasting operation in al-Walajeh, a village next to Bethlehem of just under 2,000 residents. The route of the Israeli wall will completely cut al-Walajeh off from neighboring villages and the rest of the West Bank once it is completed.

An Israeli spokeswoman told Palestinian news source Ma’an last Thursday, “It was routine construction for the fence.”

Israel prefers to call the wall, which is 22 feet high in Bethlehem, a “security fence.” About 80% of will be built inside the West Bank, however, and Palestinians deem it an illegal land grab. Settlements such as Har Gilo, which stands behind the wall next to al-Walajeh, are expected to benefit from the land acquisitions.

The names, nationalities, and ages of the injured and arrested protesters are not known, but al-Walajeh has held weekly events against the wall and settlements for the past six years.
