Silwan, Jerusalem (SILWANIC)

Residents of Silwan erected a tent in Wadi Hilweh today, 20 November, in protest to Israeli authorities’ plans to evict the local Sumrain family. The eviction, scheduled to take place on 28 November, poses a major strategic gain for the settler movement in Silwan.

The Sumrain family has been ordered to pay 2 million NIS to the “execution office”, despite the fact that payment would not even halt or slow the eviction process. Once the family has been evicted, it is expected that the ”execution office”  will transfer ownership of the property to the Elad settler organisation, which has spearheaded the settlement movement in Wadi Hilweh. The organisation enjoys extensive support from state bodies such as the Israeli Antiquities Authority and tourism boards in their City of David archaeological project.
