Yet another Palestinian mosque has been torched in the West Bank, as violent Jewish extremists continue their string of attacks against mosques and Palestinian properties.

The attack took place overnight in the village of Burqa with carpets and chairs burned and more anti-Arab graffiti scrawled on the walls.

“Carpets and chairs in the women’s section were partly burnt and on the wall was Hebrew graffiti saying ‘The war has started’,” said Abdelkader Abdeljalil, mayor of Burqa village, which lies several kilometers east of Ramallah.

The perpetrators doused the mosque with gasoline before setting it on fire.

This marks the latest in a stream of “price tag” attacks on Palestinians and their property at the hands of Israeli settlers, and only a day after a 13th century heritage mosque in Jerusalem was similarly vandalized.

In the past week settlers raided the West Bank villages of Duma, Yasuf, and Kifl Haris, setting fire to residents’ cars, according to Palestinian security officials and Ma’an News Agency.

Jewish extremists also targeted an Israeli army base near the Jordanian-West Bank border on Monday, hurling rocks at Israeli soldiers, and slashing army vehicle tires.

The wave of attacks prompted a barrage of condemnation from Israeli officials, but it remains uncertain whether the perpetrators will be punished.

Israeli officials regularly condemn such attacks, but very rarely arrest the perpetrators.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied violent Jewish extremists were terrorists on Wednesday, adding that the violence was carried out by “a small group that does not represent the public that lives in Judea and Samaria,” referring to the West Bank.

Netanyahu has nevertheless agreed to firmer measures against violent settlers, including allowing Israeli soldiers to arrest them, a task normally reserved for Israeli police.

Israeli troops regularly arrest Palestinians on a weekly basis for unspecified reasons, while violent Jewish settlers are often granted lenient treatment by occupation forces.

Israel maintains a military occupation of the West Bank, and continues to expand illegal Jewish settlements in defiance of international law and to the detriment of the indigenous Palestinian population.
