JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Hundreds of Jewish extremists rallied in the Old City of Jerusalem on Sunday night, chanting racist anti-Arab slogans.

Ma’an’s Jerusalem correspondent said extremists walked through the al-Wad neighborhood of the Old City at around midnight, beating drums and chanting slogans.

A large number of Israeli police officers were accompanying the extremists, witnesses said.

East Jerusalem is considered occupied territory under international law and its annexation in 1967 by Israel is not recognized by the international community.

Since 1967, Israel has implemented policies designed to change the demographics of the city in order to guarantee Israeli sovereignty, rights groups say.

This includes policies designed to increase the Jewish population of the city while reducing the number of Palestinians living there.

Israeli settlers number 500,000 in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, living in Jewish-only communities that are illegal under international law.
