Paris, December 29 (QNA) – France today condemned the Israeli decision to expand settlements in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank as “provocative.” Spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry Bernard Valero said that “France is very concerned over the acceleration of the provocative declarations and resolutions in the field of Israeli settlement in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.”

He added that “France strongly condemns the decision taken yesterday by the Jerusalem municipality to allow the construction of 130 new housing units in the settlement of Gilo and the construction of a tourist complex in the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan in occupied East Jerusalem. Valero stressed that France also condemns the agreement which the Israeli government concluded to give legality to the settlement of Ramat Gilad the northern part of the West Bank, reminding of the need to remove all illegal settlements in implementation of the Israeli commitment under the road map of 2003.

The French Foreign Ministry Spokesman said: “We recall that settlement in all its forms is illegal in international law, and as France and its European partners said atn the UN Security Council on December 20, the deliberate and systematic expansion of settlements threaten the two-state solution which is the fundamental solution to ensure the security of Israel in the long term.
