Palestinians have condemned an Israeli plan to build a large tourism complex in the Silwan neighborhood of East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

On Wednesday, the Israeli regime approved plans for the tourism center and another 130 illegal settlement units elsewhere in al-Quds.

Palestinian activists censured the move, saying that the project was in line with Israel’s plans to take over the neighborhood.

Head of the Silwan Defense Committee Fakhri Abu Diab said the project “aims to promote settler tourism,” adding that local land had been confiscated for the project.

The tourist complex includes 250 parking spaces, an archaeological park, an events hall and a library.

Israel also approved a plan for the construction of 130 Jewish settlement units in al-Quds on Wednesday. The plan is one of the phases of a multi-year process for the expansion of the Gilo neighborhood.

About 200,000 Israelis live in a dozen settlement neighborhoods in the occupied al-Quds.

Israel has repeatedly been criticized by the international community for illegal settlement activities on the occupied Palestinian land.

In November, the Tel Aviv regime decided to speed up the building process of settlement units in al-Quds and the West Bank in response to an October 31 vote by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which extended full membership to Palestinians.
