Three Palestinian cars were set on fire and a mosque vandalized overnight in a West Bank village in yet another ‘price tag’ attack by Jewish extremists.

The incident took place in Deir Istiya village, which lies 15 kilometers southwest of Nablus. It is surrounded by nine settlements, including Ariel which is the fourth largest illegal Jewish settlement in the West Bank.

“Three settlers came in a red car with Israeli plates at around 1:40 am and wrote ‘price tag’ on the wall of the mosque,” said Nathmi Salman Abu Nawwab, head of the village council, adding that the incident was witnessed by several villagers.

“They poured liquid on the cars and set them alight then they quickly drove off on a road heading towards Immanuel,” he said, referring to a settlement which lies north of the village.

He added that Deir Istiya has been targeted several times, with the attackers believed to be local settlers.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said investigators were treating it as “a criminal incident with nationalist motives” in reference to a “price tag” attack.

‘Price tag’ is used by Israeli settlers in attacks on Palestinians and their property in retaliation for perceived anti-settler actions by the Israeli government.

The attacks have also recently been directed at left-wing Israeli activists and the Israeli army.

It is the latest in a string of arson attacks that have escalated against Palestinians in the West Bank in recent weeks.

Two vehicles were torched in a village in East Jerusalem last week by Jewish extremists. The arsonists also spray painted Hebrew graffiti, and “price tag” and “revenge” near the burned out cars.

In December, a mosque in Jerusalem was torched and inflammatory graffiti in Hebrew was sprayed on the walls, as well as anti-Muslim and racist slurs including, “Mohammad is a pig” and “a good Arab is a dead Arab.”

Israel recently barred 12 Jewish extremists involved in such attacks from entering the West Bank for up to a year, none of whom were detained or imprisoned.

The move appears to have had no effect on reducing Jewish extremist violence.

Israeli officials regularly condemn such attacks, but rarely arrests the perpetrators.

Jewish settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law, but construction continues in defiance of the international community and to the detriment of the indigenous Palestinian population.

Israel has maintained a military occupation of the West Bank since 1967, and imposes strict conditions on native Palestinians while the settler community enjoys a number of privileges, including Jewish-only roads.

The Jewish state also maintains a siege on Gaza.
