For years Israel has been using administrative detention to lock up Palestinian activists without charge or trial.”

Amnesty International urges Israeli authorities to either release a Palestinian detainee, Khader Adnan, or charge him with a recognizable criminal offense as he entered the 51st day of a hunger strike.

Adnan, 34, was arrested on December 17, 2011 at his home in the village of Arrabe near Jenin in the occupied West Bank. He has been held without trial ever since in what Israel calls “administrative detention.”

The Palestinian activist, who went on an open-ended hunger strike one day after his arrest, is facing severe health consequences and has been moved to a hospital.

“For years Israel has been using administrative detention to lock up Palestinian activists without charge or trial,” Ann Harrison, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East said in a statement.

“Military commanders can renew the detention orders repeatedly, so in effect detainees can be held indefinitely. The process violates their right to a fair trial which is guaranteed by international law Israel is obliged to uphold.”

Last Wednesday a military court conducted a review of Khader Adnan’s case but the judge has yet to announce the outcome – release, his detention shortened or the order confirmed.

According to Ma’an News Agency there are currently 307 prisoners in administrative detention — without charge — in Israeli jails.
