Silwan, Jerusalem (SILWANIC) – Israeli forces arrested 13-year old Mufeed Obaydat on 12 February on the junction of Ein al-Louzeh and Wadi Qadoum, an area locally known as “the bridge”. Eyewitnesses reported that troops used pepper spray on the youngster before arresting him.

Clashes raged in Ein al-Louzeh that same afternoon, centered in the Al-Awar alleys. Youth erected blockades in the narrow streets to in an attempt prevent Israeli troops from entering. The neighborhood was ultimately stormed by troops, and met by stones thrown by local youth.

Obaydat’s lawyer stated that police intend to request an extension of his detention in court the following day. Eyewitnesses deny Obaydat’s participation in neighborhood clashes, stating that he was also arrested a significant distance from the violence.

The clashes were marked by the Israeli erection of a flying checkpoint at the bottom of Wadi Hilweh Street, were a large number of unwarranted traffic tickets were issued to Palestinian drivers. The atmosphere remained tense throughout Silwan for the remainder of the day.
