Clashes Break Out in al-Ram following Army Killing of Resident

WAFA FEB 25 2012

RAMALLAH, February 25, 2012 (WAFA) – Palestinian residents of the northern Jerusalem town of al-Ram clashed Saturday with Israeli soldiers on the outskirts of the town following a tense night after soldiers had shot and killed a 25-year-old resident the day before, according to witnesses.

Israeli soldiers Friday opened fire and killed Talat Ramiyeh, 25, during demonstrations on the outskirts of al-Ram in protest against Israeli police crackdown on protests inside al-Aqsa Mosque earlier that day.

Violent clashes broke out at al-Ram main entrance, where Israeli soldiers opened live fire and shot rubber bullets and tear gas grenades at the Palestinians who responded by throwing rocks and empty bottles at the soldiers and barricaded the streets to hinder movement of Israeli army vehicles.

Similar clashes also broke out in the town late Friday night when residents demonstrated against Ramiyeh’s death. Al-Ram is observing a general strike in mourning throughout Saturday.

Ramiyeh’s body is supposed to be laid to rest at al-Ram cemetery following the noon prayers Saturday.
