BEIRUT: Lebanon’s Grand Mufti chaired an urgent meeting Monday of Muslim religious scholars to discuss the Palestinian cause and Muslim unity.

Sheikh Hassan Abdallah, chairman of the administrative committee of the Union of Muslim Ulama, said the the Mufti, Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani, has prioritized the Palestinian issue following the incidents at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Qabbani on Sunday denounced the “Israeli aggression at Al-Aqsa mosque and its storming by Israeli settlers.”

Israeli police clashed with hundreds of Palestinians throwing rocks after Muslim prayers at Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site Friday.

Abdallah added that Qabbani considers Muslim unity, another of the subjects to be discussed, to be one of the most important objectives of Dar Al-Fatwa.
