GAZA, (PIC)– A Hamas leader in Gaza has refuted press reports about differences within his movement about the election of Khaled Mishaal for chairmanship of its political bureau.

He described in a statement on Friday the report published by the London-based Al-Hayat newspaper as a “sheer lie”.

The paper claimed that Mishaal opted not to nominate himself for chairmanship of Hamas due to his feeling that leaders within the movement were conspiring against him.

Bardawil described the report as a “desperate attempt” to picture Hamas as weak and plagued with internal differences.

The truth is absolutely to the contrary, he said, adding that Mishaal’s wish not to nominate himself was respected by all movement leaders, who addressed verbal and written messages to him asking him to retract his decision.

Speaking about another issue, Bardawil said that Hamas was pondering opening offices in countries of the Arab Spring, describing the revolutions in those countries as positive for the Palestine cause.
