Man seriously wounded by tear gas canister

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — A young man was seriously wounded on Monday morning during clashes with Israeli forces near Atara checkpoint, north of Ramallah, a Ma’an correspondent said.

Dozens of young men were throwing stones at soldiers stationed at Atara checkpoint when Israeli forces fired tear gas canisters in their direction.

Witnesses say Muhammad Tayseer Abu Awwad, 19, was seriously injured after being hit in the head with a tear gas canister.

Director of the Palestinian medical complex Ahmad Bitawi told official news agency Wafa that Abu Awwad was brought to hospital with critical head wounds and was immediately taken to surgery.

His condition was described as critical.

A group of people had gathered at the checkpoint to mark the second anniversary of the death of five members of the Awwad family, Wafa said.

They were killed when their vehicle collided with an Israeli military jeep.
