A statement from the PLO’s International Relations Department pointed out that so-called administrative detention is contrary to international law and human rights conventions.
“The Israeli occupation authorities are ignoring their obligations under the recent prisoner exchange and have re-arrested a number of prisoners released under the deal,” said the statement. “The Israelis are forcing Palestinian prisoners to undergo DNA tests and are depriving them of their human rights; they should be held accountable by the international community.”
The PLO added that the prisoners issue is both political and humanitarian in nature, and the international community must act responsibly to force Israel to abide by international law and treat Palestinian prisoners as prisoners of war: “Administrative detention and all of the other repressive measures that are being practiced against the prisoners should be ended forthwith.”
