RAMALLAH, (PIC)– The Ramallah Magistrate’s Court, on Wednesday, extended the detention of the Palestinian journalist Youssef Shayeb 15 more days on the backdrop of a report about corruption in the PA diplomatic mission in France which he published last month.

Youssef’s wife, who attended the court, said that the judge approved the request of the Attorney General in Ramallah to extend Shayeb’s detention for 15 days on charges of libel and defamation, and to demand U.S. $ 6 million as financial compensation.

She also mentioned that Minister of Foreign Affair in the Ramallah government, Riyad al-Malki, is the one who brought the lawsuit against her husband, and asked for this financial compensation

PA police in the West Bank arrested Shayeb two days ago and had turned him to the public prosecution, which had subjected him to interrogation. He was then kept in detention for two days before being brought before a judge on Wednesday who extended his detention 15 more days.

Shayeb’s wife told fellow journalists, who were protesting his detention by the PA security outside the court complex in in the suburb of Balou of Ramallah, that her husband announced before the Magistrates’ Court judge that he decided to go on an open hunger strike protesting his continued detention without any legal justification.

The journalists who have declared their solidarity with Shayeb demanded the immediate release of their colleague and a halt to all legal measures taken against him. They also demanded an investigation into the information reported by Shayeb in his report on rampant corruption within PA Mission in France rather than arrest and try the journalist who reported it.
