‘Israel keeps Palestinian inmates on hunger strike in isolation’

Palestinians shout slogans while holding posters of Hanaa Shalabi, a prisoner who spent 43 days on hunger strike, as they wait to greet her near the Erez border crossing between Israel and the northern Gaza Strip on April 1, 2012.
The Palestinian Authority (PA) has accused the Israeli regime of forcing some 20 Palestinian prisoners to break their hunger strike by blocking their access to any outside communication.

“Prisoners were cut from outside communication in their solitary confinement,” said PA Deputy Minister of Prisoners’ Affairs Ziad Abu Ein on Tuesday.

The Israeli efforts to isolate the inmates aims to “check the supporters’ growing solidarity with the hunger strikers and to withhold information about their health conditions,” said Abu Ein.

Palestinian inmates in Israeli prisoners have been on hunger strike to protest their indefinite detention without formal charges.

More than 20 Palestinian prisoners are currently on hunger strike to protest their imprisonment by the Tel Aviv regime without charges. Administrative detention allows the Israeli military to hold people indefinitely without charging them or allowing them to stand trial.

According to Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics and prisoner advocacy groups, there are currently over 6,000 Palestinian prisoners, including legislators, in Israeli jails, many of whom have been rounded up without charge or trial. Independent sources put the number of the inmates at 11,000.
