Amqa and Kweikat: The Warm Up March

As thousands of Israeli families gathered yesterday to celebrate Israeli Independence Day, so did thousands of the displaced Palestinian families living inside the green line. However, instead of celebrating the anniversary of Israel’s independence, Arab families gathered together in order to commemorate the simultaneous ethnic cleansing and destruction of their own villages brought forth via the creation of the Israeli state.

Approximately five thousand people convened upon land that once use to be the Palestinian villages of Amqa and Kweikat—both of which were ethnically cleansed during the 1948 Nakba (Arabic for Catastrophe – refers to the dispossession and exodus of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the creation of Israel).

Yom Al-Nakba (The day of the Catastrophe) is usually commemorated on May 15th by Palestinian refugees throughout the Middle East as well as the residents of the occupied West Bank and Gaza; however, for the last 15 years, Palestinian families residing within the state of Israel have chosen to conduct their symbolic March of Return in concurrence with Israel’s celebration of independence. Each year, the march has been held in a different area, upon land of what was once a Palestinian village.
