Gaza’s Carnations Wilting in the Dark – Photography

PNN | April 30, 2012

The ongoing electricity and fuel crisis in Gaza is affecting what few exports are allowed out as prime quality cut carnations that need to be stored in refrigerated rooms are wilting ahead of time.

Gaza’s remaining 30 carnation farmers who export their flowers to the Netherlands under an agreement arranged by the Dutch government are experiencing long hours without electricity and have not been able to purchase enough fuel to regularly run their refrigerators on generators. This is compromising their entire business at a critical time, as carnation season and the opportunity to earn income through export will soon come to an end for this growing year.

“The power cuts and lack of fuel jeopardise the cooling chain and stability needed by flowers at all stages and farmers have had to throw away flowers that spoiled because of this.” said Mohammed Zwayyed, Marketing Officer at Oxfam partner Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committees (PARC).

This is reflected in the dwindling figures of carnations exported over the past month, although Zwayyed said the decrease is also due to the fact that spring weather abroad encourages production in European countries competing for the same market. Carnation exports peaked last month with the transfer of 2.7 million cut stems that are expected to go down to 2 million by the end of this month.

The de-facto authorities in Gaza have so far supplied around 50 litres of fuel to farmers since the beginning of the crisis, now in its third month. Meanwhile all kinds of farms and agricultural land are also affected, as there is not enough fuel to run the pumps needed to irrigate their fields.

“The electricity crisis and fuel shortage is obviously affecting farmers’ profits and the quality of their crops, but we will see the worst effects in a few months’ time, especially in the dry month of August when crops will needs a lot of irrigation,” Zwayyed said.

As one of the mitigating measures, Oxfam is now planning training sessions with small scale farmers on the best use of water and the most efficient ways of irrigation, maximising water use when it is available. Large scale farms however face bigger problems given their water demand.

Deliberate deprivation of power or fuel, not only damages economy of Gaza, it also is an indirect tool of ethnic cleansing in the passive way, causing many deaths.

Ministery declares state of emergency – Photography

Articles 55 and 56 of the Fourth Geneva Convention clearly establish that Israel, as the occupying power, not only has a duty to ensure medical supplies reach hospitals in the OPT, but to ensure and maintain the services of the hospitals too. As High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions, other states not only have a moral duty but also a legal obligation to ensure Israel abides by its commitments to the protected population of the OPT.

UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, As a States Party to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Israel is obliged under Article 24 of the treaty to recognise the right of every child under its effective jurisdiction “to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health and to facilities for the treatment of illness and rehabilitation of health. States Parties shall strive to ensure that no child is deprived of his or her right of access to such health care services”.

Not only the 7-month old baby, but 173 children died due to lack of a permit:

While in the horrible holocaust, 1 in 6, so 1 million people died of the Nazi but exactly similar deliberate deprivation, Israel is doing exactly the same to Palestinians. Research (see link below) showed the annual deathrate by violent & passive aggression is about 5000 deaths a year. Called Avoidable mortality or Excess Death.

For the sake of children and ill people in Palestine, share this post as wide as you can and keep sharing it. Health is no choice for many, right to medical care is a Human Right. Infringement of such is a passive form of aggression which policies Israel deliberately deploys with the intention to ethnic cleanse.

Due to unbelievable & increasing shocking news like this, this post will be updated continuously the coming days with related news and more resources. Please keep checking for updates.

How many more dead corpses of Palestinians and their children does the international community need to see in order to act?
How many more cruelties and violations of Human Rights, Regulations and International Law will be needed?
How long so the world intervenes in this ongoing warcrime and it will be stopped once and for all?
