RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Protesting relatives of prisoners in Israeli jails forced the International Red Crescent headquarters in al-Bireh to temporarily close on Thursday.
Family members prevented employees from entering the building, calling on the UN to intervene to protect hunger strikers, a Ma’an correspondent said.
Protesters said they opposed the negative role which the Red Crescent plays in relation to the issue of prisoners and called on international organizations to stop Israeli violations against Palestinian detainees.
On Wednesday, a group of around 50 protesters blocked the entrance to the United Nations office in Ramallah, slamming the UN for not intervening to save hunger-striking prisoners.
“We are highlighting the importance of implementing all the prisoners’ demands, especially as some hunger-strikers have now reached a dangerous medical condition,” a protester said.
Hundreds of Palestinians in Israeli jails joined a group of hunger-strikers on April 17 protesting detention without charge. Around 2,000 are now taking part in the strike, rights groups say.
