Al Qassam website (Agencies) – Protestors will gather outside the BBC in central London later today to protest at its biased coverage of Palestine and the Israeli occupation.
They will hand in a letter, signed to Helen Boaden, the BBC’s Director of News, highlighting the BBC’s sparse coverage of the mass hunger strike by more than 2,000 Palestinians held in Israel’s jails which lasted four weeks and came to an end on Monday (14 May).
During this time, while ignoring the Palestinians’ hunger strike, BBC television and radio news gave prominent coverage to Chinese dissident, Chen Guangcheng, and the hunger strike of Ukrainian politician, Yulia Tymoshenko.
The same letter will also be sent to Lord Patten, Chair of the BBC. It asks for balanced and fuller coverage of Palestine and the occupation.
Sarah Colborne, Director of Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said: ‘The Palestinian hunger strike, possibly the biggest in modern history, received minimal coverage on BBC Online and, until its final few days, none on BBC television and radio news. Information was then broadcast using interviews with Israeli government spokesperson, Mark Regev, yet failed to report Palestinian voices in their reporting of the story. The BBC also failed to highlight where Israeli treatment of Palestinian prisoners was contrary to international law.
‘The BBC’s attitude towards the Palestinian hunger strikes is symptomatic of the BBC’s general attitude towards reporting on Palestine and the occupation. It is, unfortunately, an attitude that cuts across the whole of the BBC, from the Director General and his refusal to broadcast a DEC appeal for Gaza in 2009 to Radio 1Xtra and the censorship of the word ‘Palestine’ from an artist’s rap performance in 2011.’
