#PalHunger | Football legend Cantona backs Palestinian hunger striker

URGENT | June 14, 2012 | 20 children started hunger strike in Israeli prison

French football legend Eric Cantona has joined the list of supporters of Palestinian hunger striker Mahmoud Sarsak, who has been without food for 90 days.

Cantona sent a letter to British Sports Minister Hugh Robertson and UEFA president Michel Platini demanding the release of 25-year-old football player.

Among the other celebrities signing the letter were left-wing academic Noam Chomsky and film director Ken Loach.

“It is time to end Israel’s impunity and to insist on the same standards of equality, justice and respect for international law that we demand of other states,” said the letter.

Sarsak has been on hunger strike for about 90 days to protest against his detention for three years without charge.

He is held under Israel’s Unlawful Combatants Law, which enables the country to hold Palestinians from Gaza without trial effectively indefinitely.

Leading human rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have condemned Israel’s detention policies as a violation of international humanitarian laws.

Palestinian football leaders had recently urged UEFA to remove Israel as the 2013 European Under-21 Championship host nation for jailing Palestinian national team players without trial.
