TEL AVIV, Israel (Ma’an) — Israel’s Jerusalem municipality has asked the army to take responsibility for civilian matters pertaining to Jerusalem residents east of the wall, Israeli media reported Tuesday.
The municipality’s director-general, Yossi Heiman, made the request at a municipality meeting three weeks ago, saying the civil administration could increase its responsibilities, Haaretz reported.
The report said the municipality wanted the army to take responsibility for monitoring construction and providing sanitation services. A committee will present a proposal to the government, it said.
The population of some 90,000 east Jerusalem residents on the eastern side of the barrier lack regular municipal services from either Israel or the Palestinian Authority.
