GAZA, (PIC)– Palestinian prisoner Akram Al-Rikhawi suspended his hunger strike which lasted more than 100 days after the Israeli prison authority agreed to reduce his prison term to six months.
Rikhawi, 40, went on hunger for 104 days in protest at his arbitrary detention without guilt.
The jailers, consequently, decided to release him in six months instead of one year.
For its part, Wa’ed society for detainees and ex-detainees saluted prisoner Rikhawi for his triumph over his jailers and his success in pressuring them to succumb to his demands.
“The battle of empty stomachs, day after day, proves efficacy in the face of the enemies of humanity and proves that the free prisoners are able, despite the enemy’s savageness and the difference in power, to teach the enemy an unforgettable lesson about determination,” Wa’ed said in a statement on Monday.
According to Wa’ed, Israeli officials from the prison authority and security apparatuses also agreed during their meeting with prisoner Rikhawi in the hospital of Ramle jail to allow him as of next week to be reunited with his captive brother Shadi.

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.
The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
