ISESCO calls for action against threat to “move” Al-Aqsa Mosque

MEMO | Aug 9, 2012

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) has called on its member states and the international community to take action following a threat to “move” Al-Aqsa Mosque and replace it with a Jewish temple.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, ISESCO condemned the suggestion by an extreme right-wing Member of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, that the mosque must be taken down and rebuilt elsewhere in order to build a temple in its place. Aryeh Eldad’s remarks, claims ISESCO, “represent incitement to carry out a terrorist and criminal act”.

ISESCO also condemned the decision of the Israeli-led Jerusalem municipality to consider the squares of the Noble Sanctuary of Al-Aqsa as public spaces, adding that the excavations being carried out by Israel pose a physical threat to the mosque itself. This, says ISESCO, is an act of aggression against the Islamic heritage of Jerusalem in violation of international law, which member states and the world community must take action against.
