Palestinians have staged a protest rally in the besieged Gaza Strip to demand the release of prisoners on hunger strike in Israeli jails.

Chanting anti-Israeli slogans, hundreds of Palestinians marched from the Red Cross headquarters toward the UN office in the besieged coastal strip on Monday to express support for the Palestinian prisoners held in Israel without trial or charge and demanded the international community secure their release.

On Friday, human rights group Amnesty International warned two Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike are in grave danger.

According to an April 1, 2012 report published by the non-governmental Palestinian prisoner support and human rights association, Addameer, at least 4,610 “political” Palestinian prisoners are held in Israeli jails, mostly held under administrative detention.

Independent sources put the number of the inmates at 11,000.

The administrative detention, often implemented by the Israeli regime against Palestinians, means a prisoner can be held for up to six months without trial or charge. However, the detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.

A journal published by Adalah, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel and Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights | June 26, 2012

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.

The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
