RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — The Palestinian Authority minister of prisoner affairs on Wednesday called for popular participation to support detainees launching a one-day hunger strike on the anniversary of the Oslo Accords.
Issa Qaraqe said that prisoners held in Israeli jails would launch strike action on Thursday to demand the release of 123 prisoners detained before the 1993 agreement, signed on September 13.
A prisoners statement from Hadarim jail called on President Mahmoud Abbas and the countries which supported Oslo to end their suffering.
In July, Qaraqe said that Abbas refused an Israeli offer for the staged release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for returning to peace talks.
Abbas insists that all 123 prisoners held since before the 1993 Oslo agreement be freed in a single release, Qaraqe added.
