#PalHunger | Safadi in grave danger after 86 days of hunger strike

RAMALLAH,(PIC)– The Israeli prison service (IPS) has summoned the lawyer of the Palestinian prisoners Society (PPS) to Assaf Harofeh hospital on Wednesday following deterioration of Hassan Safadi’s health, PPS stated.

The hunger striker Hassan Safadi, 86 days into his hunger strike, was transferred to Assaf Harofeh hospital on Wednesday, after he upped his hunger strike, and stopped drinking fluids altogether, PPA spokesman added.

Safadi ended his strike that he started in July last year after an Israeli promise to release him after six months. But he discovered that his administrative detention order had been renewed for four other months. That pushed him to resume his hunger strike to protest this violation of the agreement. His renewed hunger strike has lasted 85 days.

Currently, four administrative detainees are on hunger strike: Hassan Safadi, Samer al-Barq, Ayman Sharawna, and Samer al-Eisawy. Each has his own story of bitterness and dignity.

The four prisoners on hunger strike have vowed to continue their battle until they are released from what they describe as an ongoing injustice. Samer Barq and Hasan Safadi have been on hunger strike for 116 and 86 days respectively. Ayman Sharawna and Samer Issawi, who were both released in last year’s October prisoners’ swap were rearrested in violation of the deal and as a result have been on hunger strik for 76 and 45 days respectively.

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.

The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
