RAMALLAH, (PIC)– The two Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jail Samer al-Barq and Hassan Safadi have suspended their long-term hunger strikes expecting upcoming release.

The lawyer of the Palestinian prisoners society, Jawad Boulus, said he visited Samir al-Barq and Hasan Safadi on Sunday, and confirmed the two prisoners had suspended their strike, adding that Hassan Safadi, has been returned to Ramle prison clinic after he suspended his hunger strike.

The Prisoners Society lawyer has also appealed to the Israeli High Court asking for Safadi to be released immediately despite Israeli “assurances” he will be freed at the end of his current administrative detention term on Oct. 29, Boulus said.

Samir al-Barq remained in Israeli civilian hospital Assaf Harofeh and will soon be transferred to Ramle prison clinic, Boulus said.

Al-Barq suspended his strike after learning Egypt and Israel had agreed he would be transferred from jail into exile in Egypt, Boulus stated.

Al-Barq told Boulus if he is not freed to Egypt shortly he will resume his hunger strike and additionally refuse to take any liquids.

Safadi has been on hunger strike for 95 days, whereas al-Barq has spent 125 days on hunger strike.

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.

The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
