AGAIN: Israeli forces ‘deploy at Al-Aqsa after clashes’

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Hundreds of Israeli forces deployed around the al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Sunday morning, a local foundation said, as tensions continued at the Jerusalem religious site amid Jewish holidays.

Israeli troops confiscated the identity documents of worshipers in al-Aqsa and ordered a large number of youth to leave the compound, the Al-Aqsa Foundation for Heritage and Islamic Endowments said.

Israeli news site Ynet reported that a Palestinian was detained at the site on suspicion of organizing unrest at the compound in recent days.

Another two Jews were detained after they performed prayers at the site, the report said.

The Al-Aqsa foundation said dozens of Israelis had entered the al-Aqsa compound to perform religious rituals.

An Israeli police spokesman did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

The Al-Aqsa compound, containing the mosque and the Dome of the Rock, is the third holiest site in Islam and abuts the site where Jews believe the ancient Second Temple stood.

During the Jewish Sukkot holidays this week, Israeli security forces have conducted escorted tours to the site, sparking clashes with Muslim worshipers. After Friday prayers, Israeli police hurled stun grenades to disperse dozens of protesters who threw stones at forces.

The compound has long been a point of friction, with some in the Israeli far right advocating the building of a “Third Temple” over the site.

Deadly riots erupted at the same site after a visit by then Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon, at the outset of a several year Palestinian uprising in 2000.
