#PalHunger | Al-Barq resumes hunger strike to protest delayed release

Maan News Agency | Oct 15, 2012

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Samir al-Barq, a Palestinian jailed without charge in Israel, said he was resuming his hunger strike after a deal to release him to Egypt failed to come through, his lawyer told Ma’an on Monday.

Fadi Ubeidat, a PA ministry of prisoners’ affairs lawyer, said al-Barq announced his return to hunger strike on Sunday after Israel “delayed his release.”

Israeli prison service spokeswoman Sivan Weizman said while al-Barq was threatening to relaunch his protest, as of Monday he was not on hunger strike.

Al-Barq ended a 125-day strike on Sept. 23 after learning Egypt and Israel had agreed he would be transferred from jail into exile in Egypt.

He blames Israel for holding up the deal, and now says he will not accept any agreement to deport him to a third country.

Al-Barq will not end his hunger strike until he is returned to his home in Jayyous, in the northern West Bank district of Qalqiliya, Ubeidat said.

The lawyer noted it was al-Barq’s third hunger strike this year.

In May, he ended a month-long hunger strike after Israel agreed to address the issue of administrative detention and resumed his hunger strike a week later when Israel renewed his detention without charge.

He has been detained without charge or trial since July 2010.

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.

The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
