TUNISIA, (PIC)– Sheikh Ra’ed Salah, head of the Islamic Movement in the 1948 occupied lands, arrived on Friday afternoon in Tunis to partake in the international conference on Palestinian prisoners.

Dozens of dignitaries and pro-Palestinian activists from around the world also arrived at Carthage airport to attend the conference to kick off on Saturday.

Advisor to the Tunisian president for international affairs Anwr Al-Gharbi told Quds Press that the conference would be chaired by the Tunisian president Moncef Marzouki in the conference palace in the capital.

He noted that two workshops addressing the issue of Palestinian prisoners would be held during the days of the conference in a hotel in Bardo city.

For his part, senior Hamas official Salah Al-Bardawil hailed the Tunisian leadership for organizing a conference on the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and thanked the Tunisian president and his people for supporting the Palestinian cause.

“To hold an international conference on the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails in a country that started the Arab spring like Tunisia means that other steps will follow in the rest of the Arab spring states and in the Arab countries in general,” Bardawil told Quds Press on Friday.

“We always call for activating the file of prisoners in Israeli jails at the Arab and Islamic levels because the Palestinian prisoner is an Arab and Muslim detainee who has been captured for defending the dignity of the whole nation,” the Hamas official stressed.

“All the Arab countries are supposed to work hard to liberate the Palestinian prisoners from the Israeli jails, especially the females; this is the sacred duty of every Arab,” he added.

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.

The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
