ANKARA/RAMALLAH, (PIC)– The Euro-Mediterranean Observatory for Human Rights (EMOHR) called on the Palestinian Authority to prosecute the Israeli occupation for the violating the international law in dealing with Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike.
EMOHR said, in a press statement from the Turkish capital Ankara on Friday, it is worried about the international failure to save Ayman Sharawna and Samer Issawi’ lives in light of their health deterioration due to their months-long hunger strike protesting against their administrative detention.
EMOHR called on the high contracting parties in the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, to bear their responsibilities and obligations they have undertaken to respect and to ensure respect for the present Convention in all circumstances.
The observatory considered the international silence on the Israeli crimes and violations to the prisoners’ rights as a clear violation of the international Convention.
The regional director of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network, Amani al-Sinwar, called on the Palestinian Authority to submit an official request to the Swiss government to hold a conference for the High Contracting Parties in the Fourth Geneva Convention, to discuss measures to implement the Convention in the occupied Palestinian territories, and to develop operational mechanisms to ensure the Israeli respect of the convention especially in dealing with the civilian prisoners.
Al-Sinwar stated that according to Geneva convention each High Contracting Party shall be under the obligation to search for persons alleged to have committed, or to have ordered to be committed, such grave breaches, “depriving a protected person of the rights of fair and regular trial prescribed in the present Convention”, and shall bring such persons, regardless of their nationality, before its own courts.
EMOHR called on the Palestinian Authority and non-governmental organizations that support Palestine, to move seriously with the UN Human Rights Council to save the lives of the striking prisoners who reached the brink of death.
The observatory also called on the international community to pressure the Israeli occupation to release the prisoners on hunger strike or provide proof of having committed offenses.
