RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Samer Issawi is too sick to attend a hearing at Israel’s Ofer military detention center after 232 days on hunger strike, his lawyer said Thursday.
Jawad Boulus said in a statement that Issawi’s doctors informed the court that Issawi’s medical condition was too serious for him to attend the hearing.
Issawi was hospitalized in late February and stopped drinking water earlier in March.
He has serious heart problems and is using a respirator, Boulus said.
The hearing will go ahead without Issawi, the lawyer said.
Issawi was freed in the Oct. 2011 prisoner swap deal between Hamas and Israel, but soldiers rearrested him on July 7, accusing him of violating the terms of his release by leaving Jerusalem.
Israeli prosecutors are seeking to cancel his amnesty and reinstate his former sentence.

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.
The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
