The center said in a statement on Tuesday that 170 prisoners were from 1948 occupied Palestine, 177 from occupied Jerusalem, two from the Golan Heights, 536 from Gaza Strip, and 4099 from the West Bank.

It quoted a letter by the Israeli prison service, in response to a query by the Adala lawyer Reema Ayoub, as saying that 159 were held in administrative detention, without trial or charge.

The letter revealed that 546 prisoners were serving life sentences and 1224 were held pending trials or sentences.

Adala charged that the IPS was discriminating against Palestinian prisoners as far as prisoners’ rights were concerned, while pointing to the statement by the Shabak, the IPS and the higher court that the discrimination was “understandable and justifiable”.
