The participants raised photos of Jerusalemite prisoners, including captive Samer al-Issawi who has been on hunger strike for more than 270 days. They also chanted slogans supporting the prisoners and demanding an end to the division, the achievement of national unity and the release of prisoners, especially the hunger strikers.

Families of Jerusalemite prisoners committee issued on Wednesday a statement in which it pointed out that there are 265 Jerusalemite prisoners who have the blue identity in Israeli jails, including two women, and 38 detainees sentenced to life imprisonment.

The statement stressed the importance of unconditionally releasing all the prisoners, considering them prisoners of war who had exercised their natural right to defend their land.

It called for breaking the political, geographical and organizational standards set by the Israeli occupation to deal with the issue of prisoners, “because the captives represent the Palestinian society in all its dimensions.”

The statement called on the international community and human rights organizations to protect the prisoners and oblige Israel to respect the international law.

“On Torture” is an edited volume of essays by Palestinian, Israeli and international legal and medical experts and practitioners based on presentations that they gave during a workshop held in Jerusalem in April 2011 entitled, “Securing Accountability for Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment (CIDT) in Israel: New Trends and Comparative Lessons”.

The essayists explore the history of torture in Israel, the daily challenges that practitioners face in seeking accountability for torture and CIDT in Israel, and the changing face of torture.
