Eight Palestinians launched a hunger strike Monday to protest their transfer to prisons far from their families, the Palestinian Prisoner’s Club said.
The prisoners were moved from an Israeli jail in the north near their hometowns, to Ramon prison in the south. Their transfers extends the travel time for their families, who must cross through several checkpoints, by several hours, Amani Srahani, spokeswoman of the Prisoners Club, told Al-Akhbar.
“After launching their hunger strike, the prisoners were each put in solitary confinement,” Srahani said.
Jawad Boulos, head of the legal department at the Club and lawyer of the hunger strikers, said that “12 were already on hunger strike, some for more than a month,” bringing the total number of hunger strikers in Israeli prisons to 20.
The prisoners already refusing food aren’t taking any supplements and are relying on water and salt alone, Srahani said.
“Of the 12 already on strike, five of them are Jordanians. These five are the worst cases, some having been moved to hospitals in Ramleh or in Israel,” she added.
The Jordanian prisoners are demanding that they be allowed family visits, a right Israeli authorities have denied them for years.
Palestinian hunger striker Ayman Issa Hamdan, in his eighth week of hunger strike to protest his imprisonment, has also seen his health deteriorate.
“Most of [the hunger strikers] already have health conditions prior to beginning their strike. There are no prisoners in Israeli jails who do not suffer some kind of sickness as a result of the situations in the prisons,” Srahani said.
“The Israeli Prison Service does not pay any attention to them. They just try to isolate them from the rest of the prisoners,” she added.
Once a prisoner goes on hunger strike, they are not allowed to receive visits from family members. Only a lawyer can visit the hunger striker.
