RAMALLAH, (PIC)– Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) welcomed the statements of Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haneyya, in which he called for activating the elections of municipalities and student unions and councils.

Member of the DFLP Political Bureau, Saleh Zeidan, called in a press statement for accelerating holding the elections “in accordance with the principle of proportional representation.”

He pointed out that the Front has long called for holding elections as they represent the way for democratic reform, and open the way for ending internal tensions and division.

Zeidan pointed out that the “true partnership” between all spectrums of the Palestinian people would be achieved through the formation of a government of national unity or national consensus government instead of the two governments in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, in order to “apply the agreement of May 4, 2011, hold the elections and end the division.”

Gaza Premier called last week on the Palestinian factions and national forces to participate in administering the Gaza Strip.

Haneyya’s suggestion was welcomed by the Palestinian factions, except for Fatah which considered this a sign of weakness, and threatened that the Palestinian Authority will take “painful” procedures against Hamas movement, which controls the Strip.
