RAFAH, (PIC)– The Egyptian authorities decided to close the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip as of Saturday until further notice.
Director of borders and crossings in Gaza Maher Abu Sabha told the PIC reporter that the Egyptian authorities notified the Gazan side with the decision on Friday night without giving a date for reopening it.
He said that the Egyptian authorities cited recent security events in the Sinai Peninsula where the army and security apparatuses were launching a campaign against “terrorist cells” as a pretext for closing the border terminal.
The Rafah border crossing has been partially functioning since early July after the ouster of Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi and was closed on most days. Thousands of Palestinians were stranded on both sides of the border terminal as a result including patients and students among others.
