OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)– The Israeli municipal council in occupied Jerusalem approved on Thursday the construction of a religious school (yeshiva) in the predominantly-Arab neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah in east Jerusalem.
According to the plan, a nine-story religious school will be built in the heart of this neighborhood.
The plan for the new yeshiva has been approved by the Jerusalem municipal planning and building committee about six months ago, but councilman and leftist Meretz Movement leader Yosef Alalu asked for the municipal council to reconsider the decision.
Despite the severe shortage in public construction in the neighborhood, such as welfare and health offices, schools, culture institutions and sports stadiums, Alalu said in an appeal against the plan, the committee decided to use the empty lot for a nine-story yeshiva.
Following a short and stormy debate between Alalu and rightwing activist Aryeh King, the plan was passed by a large majority of rightist and haredi council members.
